FESTA DA BEFANA: a celebração do dia de reis na Itália

Dia 06 de janeiro é feriado na Itália. Celebra-se a Epifania ou Dia de Reis, uma festividade conhecida popularmente como 'A Festa da Befana'.
Befana é uma mulher idosa, de imagem semelhante a uma bruxa, que segundo uma lenda popular, ajudou os Três Reis Magos que se perderam no caminho para Belém até o Menino Jesus. Ela também não sabia o caminho, mas os convidou para passar a noite em sua casa. Na manhã seguinte, em agradecimento pela acolhida, eles a convidaram a segui-los e visitar o Menino mas ela recusa. Mais tarde, arrepende-se e segue pelo caminho tomado pelos Magos levando um presente para Jesus, mas não conseguiu encontrá-lo e decidiu parar em todas as casas para dar doces para todas as crianças. Desde então, a Befana passou a girar o mundo dando presentes a todas as crianças.
A data é aguardada com ansiedade pelas crianças, a tradição popular diz que é fundamental deixar a janela aberta, com uma meia vazia, para que a velhinha possa encher de doces e caramelos as meias das crianças que se comportaram bem no ano anterior, e aquelas que foram travessas e malvadas ganham um pedaço de carvão.
A Epifania leva embora todas as festas: também chega a hora de desmontar a árvore de Natal e começar o Ano Novo de fato.
Nas cidades italianas, a data é celebrada em festividades nas praças e procissões com decoração pelas casas e ruas com meias penduradas nas janelas, iluminações e até bonecas da bruxa Befana. Uma das festividades mais tradicionais acontece em Florença, onde três homens a cavalo percorrem as ruas da cidade para entregar oferendas ao menino Jesus.
